Heritage Days Art Festival - Mount Vernon, Iowa, July 9, 2005.I had never been to Heritage Days in Mount Vernon, but I've been told that it was a fun community event. Mount Vernon is a funky little town just a few miles from our side of Cedar Rapids, so it seemed like it would be a pretty easy show to do. There is a small private college (Cornell College) in town and a lively art scene downtown. We went on a gallery walk there in 2004 and I was impressed with the range of local talent. The weather was perfect for early July. Hot and sunny, with a little breeze now and then. The artists were set up in the city park next to the main street which was blocked off for the festivities and food vendors. My spot was well inside the park in a shady spot next to the water tower. Not the greatest site, but I was thankful for the shade. The morning started off well. I loaded up the night before, so Shelby and I just had to make sure we had the details covered and off we went. We got there and started setting up around 7:30am. We found our spot and parked as close as we could. We had to make about a zillion trips up and down a hill to get everything to our site. The display looked pretty good though. I am glad I got my new canopy. It looks a lot more professional and is a lot sturdier. A few people started trickling through starting at 9:30 or so. The show was scheduled to start at 10:00, but you always get some people early. There was a 5K run at 8:00 so there were people around early. There were very few people looking at the artworks and no buyers until the parade got over around noon. Then it was a huge flood of people! I had to hurry to rearrange my works so more people could walk through my display. Luckily I had that option where I was located so I spread out a bit. Sales were pretty steady. I sold all my crabs, the rest of my perched birds, and most of the fish. The alligators came back home with me. That's all right. They are great attention-getters. I sold some 35+ works, so I have my work cut out for me to get my inventory back up for the next show in Charles City. Thanks to everyone who came out! It was another successful show!
